Putting an executive on a one-year leash doesn’t buy you alpha. It buys you a coward.
When survival is on the line, you don’t get bold strategic shifts in high-growth tech. You get defensive bureaucracy. The so-called leader’s brain immediately shifts into self-preservation mode. They stop playing to win and start playing not to lose. They pass the buck, bury decisions in endless functions, and when the supply chain inevitably fractures, they let the little guy take the fall. That isn’t management; it’s a deep psychological weakness manifesting as corporate rot. Its corruption, plain and simple.
And don’t think financial literacy alone is the cure. Give a mercenary a spreadsheet, and they’ll just financially engineer the numbers while the actual core competency bleeds out.
To build an empire, you need the holy trinity. You need a killer with a Founder’s Mentality—someone whose very identity and ego are tied to the firm’s legacy. You pair that with Long-Term Discipline to stomach the brutal quarters without flinching, and the Financial Literacy to deploy capital without cannibalizing the future.
That’s how you strip out the fear, align the incentives, and build an unstoppable machine.
Anything less? You’re just renting a coward dressed in a suit.
