If you watch any news recently, whether it’s Bloomberg, CNN, or Fox (or any news that you avidly watch or follow) there isn’t a single day you get by without being hammered in the head with news on Artificial Intelligence.
The endless discussion about this nascent technology makes you wander if you are falling behind… Making you feel as if we you are not caught up on this technology and that you are becoming obsolete.
Well, I reckon that you are not.
Let me say this once again that….
You are not falling behind and its FOMO and fear driven by the media.
To be honest. No one really knows what’s going to happen with this technology. I have friends and colleagues who are neck deep in creating AI models, and they too have no clue on where this technology will land in our future roadmap.
But it is surely fascinating to know what this is… so here’s my best attempt to provide some illustrative explanation on it.
Navigating the AI Landscape: A Journey Beyond Fiction
The term artificial intelligence (or a human-engineered sentient being living amongst us humans) has been around for decades. You might have gotten this notion from your favorite sci-fi novels, or from your favorite sci-fi movies (mine was in the movie ‘Terminator’ when Skynet deliberately bombed humans to near extinction).
Whatever the medium of entertainment was; it’s been already placed well within your realm of imagination since the 1980s.
So then, what is this artificial intelligence everyone’s been talking about? and why are prominent figures and nations betting trillions of dollars on getting so feverishly optimistic on launching this technology into ubiquitous status?
The Trillion-Dollar Accuracy
The artificial intelligence we encounter—such as Large Language Models (LLMs)—comprises a set of highly precise prediction algorithms. In simpler terms, these models are designed to create effective predictions within texts or contexts by leveraging our finite resources to their fullest potential. These finite resources include data, software, and mathematics (statistics), all of which have been in existence for quite some time. So, there’s no groundbreaking discovery akin to a new element on the periodic table—think of it more as your typical Excel model, but on hyper-steroids.
The AI we know in this world effectively uses data with a plug-in software to make accurate predictions using advanced statistics.
But here’s the crux: the trillion-dollar worth of these models lies in their remarkable accuracy when predicting the future. When predictions reach this level of precision, the interest and financial investment surge astronomically, far surpassing what we see with typical Excel models. The ability to predict the future with such accuracy translates into enormous efficiency gains in our present reality. For instance, we no longer need to expend countless hours exploring multiple outcomes; our AI models can pinpoint the best course of action for underlying problems we seek to solve.
If we operate with greater effectiveness and efficiency in our present endeavors, we secure a significant advantage—a strategic notch—allowing us to extract the utmost value from one of the most sacred and scarce resources in the world: time.
Yes, trillions of dollars are being thrown in to this technology and the media won’t shut up about all things AI. But when really, it’s just basic economics powered by math and politics. So next time you hear a story in the news about AI, just remember that it’s a tale about a person (or an entity) to gain as much power to be the best utilizer of our precious time.
And may be… just maybe, we might be able to achieve a future like below…. lol
